3 Ways to Go Green at Your Next Trade Show
This is a guest post Daniel Frank
Trade shows are still one of the most fundamental ways for businesses to network and showcase new products. Unfortunately they are also incredibly wasteful, so how do you minimise the impact of attending these shows on the environment? In this post I hope to show how you can employ the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle mantra to cut down on costs, both ecological and financial.
Reduce
The less weight you carry the more fuel you will save. From lightweight modular exhibition stands to replacing printed brochures with online ones there are a ton of ways to save weight. For example as most people who attend trade shows now have smartphones, so instead of printing brochures put the URL for an online brochure alongside a QR code in a prominent place on your stand. This will let interested clients download the brochure as well as saving trees as you won’t have excess brochure’s being printed. Saving fuel as you won’t be transporting the brochures to the event. And saving you money as you won’t have the cost of printing and fuel.
If you really want to reduce then you can go entirely online! For example the Virtual Green Expo is an annual trade show focusing on green buildings has all the things you would expect from a trade show, but online. So Companies can set up and man booths, have giveaways, polls and quizzes as well as attending speeches all without leaving the house. Environmentally speaking this is great as attending it means there is more environmental impact than your average day at the office. No extra transport, printing or plastic giveaways. Though it doesn’t give you the face to face networking opportunities a physical trade show would this may be one of the ways we can expect trade shows to develop in the next few years.
Reuse
You know that expensive stand you brought last year for a trade show, well why not use it again? Depending on the graphics you can either just dust it off or if you really need to replace out-dated graphics then just take out the current graphics and put in a new set. Likewise you know that stock of pens you were giving out last year? Do you have any left over? It is far more ecological to plan an exhibition so that as much as possible can reused year after year. For example a modular exhibition stand will let you change the design each year without buying an ecologically and economically expensive new stand. If you get someone to design a graphic for your both and trade show materials try and pick one that won’t age quickly.
Recycle
It’s not just your water bottles and brochures that can be recycled. For example some stand manufacturers will collect and recycle old stands. In fact as technology improves more and more things can be recycled. When it comes to recycling you can also get several recycled trade show giveaways for less than a dollar, for example pens made of recycled cardboard and plastic can be brought for as little as 75 cents. You can even get golf tees made from corn based plastic for 8 cents. Although the greenness of both golf and corn plastic is debatable it goes to show the range of options available. Recycling is unfortunately the least bad option when it comes to waste disposal rather than the best. However it can make huge difference. At the Eco Gift show in December 2008 they not only had bins for recycling, composting and waste, but placed trained volunteers at each waste disposal station to ensure that all waste went into the correct bin. The end result was a reduction in waste by 90%! A similar result was achieved last year by the Toronto Property Management Expo.
Hopefully these ways of reducing waste will not only reduce your exhibits environmental impact but also help save you money, and allow you to showcase your green business model. Of course there are always more and more ways to go green.
Robert J. Gerberg Jr.: A Living Legacy of Gerbert Sr.
Making job hunting easier for applicants: That is probably the life purpose of the modest father and son tandem of Robert J. Gerberg Sr. and Robert J. Gerberg Jr. Through their extensive knowledge in hiring and managing people, they definitely know what kind of people and traits a company is looking for in an employee. They used this knowledge to help other people find a direct path towards the career they are dreaming of. The elder Gerberg used his writing skills to make books encapsulating his knowledge about human resources for companies and employment tips for job seekers. Meanwhile, the younger Gerberg made use of technology and innovation to help. These are two different ways, but only one noble quest to help.
It has been the common goal of the two to give useful career advice which have been very effective to the people they are providing them with. A lot of people whom they have previously helped are noe professionals in the corporate world, all thanks to the two’s advice. Gerberg Sr. has written over fifteen books providing job hunting advice which sold to over more than seven million copies and Gerberg Jr. started up a technology-based program and services in his own company to give advice via the web and help make attractive and compelling resume copies.
A lot of people are thankful to Gerberg Sr. when he helped a lot of people. But it seems like the Gerbers aren’t done yet in this field. When his son followed suit, a lot more people were helped even more and faster with the help of technology. Aside from the line of work, another thing they have in common is their educational background. They both took up their Bachelor’s degree in Colgate University. Both took a Master’s degree but in different universities; Gerberg Sr. in University of Pittsburgh and Gerberg Jr. in University of Colorado at Boulder – Leeds School of Business. It seems that the young Gerberg is following in the footsteps of his father, but in a very different approach.
It is safe to say that the world became a better place by far, with more and more people being assisted and advised by them. This duo is the pioneer win providing professional job hunting help to people who seeks their knowledge in the field that they are most knowledgeable at. Robert J. Gerberg Jr. and Sr.: two men of different generations, different methods of sharing insights and wisdom, but both great forces to reckon.
Make Your Business Neighbourly by Clearing Snow and Ice
Purchasing winter snow and ice clearing materials from Key.co.uk is an economical way to help you to act in a neighbourly way by clearing snow and ice from pavements and public spaces around your business. You’ll need to have your rock salt, shovel and spreader handy as you’ll need to start clearing the snow and ice before it becomes packed down by people walking or driving on it. It is much easier to remove fresh, loose snow.
Pay particular care to any steps or ramps at your business. Key.co.uk sells bulk rock salt so you can liberally apply it to areas that present a special danger to your customers and your staff. If you have large areas to clear, be sure to get a salt spreader. It will make quick work of clearing car parks, etc. and it’s much safer than shoveling salt or grit. Each year,UK hospitals see people who have had heart attacks trying to shovel snow or salt.
Shopkeepers to take slow clearing action to help keep Britain’s walkways safe during any spells of severe winter weather. If people can’t get to your shop’s front door, you can clear the ssnow and ice from public areas as long as you do not make the pavement or pathway clearly more dangerous than before. Also, try not to get rock salt on public greenery, it is lethal to many plants.
Five Innovative Predictions To Hit Video Conferencing In The Next Decade
Gone are the days of the road warriors, those daily business travellers with their expense accounts, never-ending bonus miles and first class upgrades. No longer do companies support a squadron of ever-moving ambassadors for their products. Technology and practicality teamed up to produce video conferencing. With video conferencing, sales meetings and company gatherings could be conducted without the expense of actually meeting or gathering the team. This translated directly to lower costs and more efficient use of time.
Greater advances in the science have led to new uses for video conferencing. Physicians conduct exams, fitness consultants run exercise classes and therapists analyse their patients via video. Sales of telehealth hardware and software is expected to be near $990 million by 2015. By 2020, the entire industry is projected to expand to $6 billion.
The science isn’t static. New products and uses are on the horizon. Video conferencing is not only here to stay, it is going to keep changing the way we interact with one another. Here are five inventions that are going to revolutionize video conferencing in the next decade.
1. Holographic Technology
Holographic technology will be evident in holographic projectors and data storage. Until now, video projectors in smart phones and other small devices couldn’t deliver sharp images because the necessary lights were too hot. Laser-based holograms don’t require the space and don’t overheat the host device. Larger models capable of delivering holographic television broadcasting are in the research phase. Holotechnology will also revolutionize data storage by replacing Flash with holographic memory. PDAs and smart phones could have five gigabytes of storage. The devices will also have a holographic projector for watching videos and television on a wall.
2. Video Mail (V-mail)
Just as the U.S. Post Office had to compete with electronic mail, e-mail will be competing with video mail, another new technology. Senders will use a webcam to compose their message. The recipient will receive notification of the video mail. The message will be stored and accessed from a remote server. This use of cloud computing will not require download client software. This technology will especially benefit those who cannot type or have other physical limitations.
3. Video Answering Machine
With the implementation of video e-mail, a video answering machine is the next logical step. Apple toyed with including the option in their Leopard operating system in 2006. A recent patent filing suggests the digital video answering machine will be a reality soon. When a user is not available, the answering machine will play a pre-recorded video for any incoming calls.
4. Widespread Usage of Personal Broadcasting
Personal broadcasting lets anybody be the CEO of their own broadcasting network. Some folks rely on members to provide content, some “borrow” their content and others compose their own content. Some feeds are like video blogs. Their hosts might use the feed to politicize, document their world or entertain. Compared to television, the fees are very cheap. Success can be measured in thousands of viewers, not millions. The personal broadcaster also enjoys the freedom of being the boss.
5. Video conferencing Translating Services
Translating services and software will be hot in the near future. If you want to broadcast your own international network, you’ll need software to subtitle your video or to translate your webpage. You can also hire a voice-over actor after auditioning from a list of available candidates. Having multi-lingual versions of your content can lead to international commerce.

Chinese Companies Treatment
August 22 – With the news of the Chinese government intends to continue with plans for a slow increase of currency despite the reduction in U.S. debt rating, many foreign-owned companies in China are more than happy that the yuan continues its current course. For the first time since 1993, the yuan rose above 6.4 against the dollar last week, prompting speculation that the Bank of China could be about to let the yuan rise faster. Most analysts in the media, however, have cut these speculations. That’s a good thing for most foreign-owned enterprises in China. Companies have already been hard hit this year with increases in mandatory welfare payments, salary increases and an increase in prices caused primarily by inflation.
In catering, for example, the price of pork – a staple in Chinese cooking – has doubled in the last nine months. In planning the budget for 2011, knowing that this increase will impact the profitability for the year, I know many foreign-owned companies expect a reduction in the margins and need to tighten their belts. Prudence has been the key to financial managers in China this year. However, despite the price increases are already being felt, this has been offset by foreign currency position for companies that receive much of income in RMB tending accounts elsewhere.
